A year in the life of a farmer grants many opportunities to give thanks to God, family, friends, community, and the entire good earth!

We give thanks for the sunrise each morning. The hues of blue, lavender, pink are a calm but wondrous backdrop for the black and shades of grey and white now in the forest. The local artist Al Mohler captured these beautiful sunrise colors in his paintings of Minnesota landscapes. We didn’t fully appreciate his talent until we returned to Minnesota 9 years ago with fresh eyes.

We give thanks for honest work that shows results yet often must be repeated again and again. Feeding hay, mucking out manure is akin to the “Carry water, chop wood” of the ascetic’s search for meaning.

We give thanks for neighbors, friends, and family who help and support our effort to provide healthy, nutritious food from a small family sustainable farm. The future of our health as a community and nation is inextricably linked to our ability to feed ourselves well without harming or depleting the resources of our good earth.

We thank God for our many blessings and the rich variety of our lives. As perhaps is true of many other pursuits, farming presents the miraculous and divine nature of all things on a daily basis. We are humbled and honored to enjoy such a pursuit!
