Text Box: Spring Planning, continued

Brother-in-law Clair and Barb have teamed up with their new Logosol sawmill to improve the use of trees culled from the woodlots. It will cut logs from 4 feet to 16 feet in length and has no problem cutting interesting slabs from crooked, unusual but interesting logs. We manage to stay in logs and firewood just from culled trees in the woodlands. Clair has, over the years, released some trees from competition allowing them to grow more quickly and more straight. This also allows more sunlight to reach the forest floor and allows more forage growth for deer and livestock—a variant of multistory cropping. This year we’ll also complete our EQIP (Environmental Quality Improvement Program) fencing project that  allows us to exclude the cattle from selected parts of the woodland.
