traditional medical establishment says “NO!” We are blessed with freezers full of home grown and chemical free beef, pork, chicken, venison, and, thanks to the nephews, wild fish. All the garden gave last year was potatoes and beets. The latter are pickled and going fast. I would have to search further for more organic vegetables and fruits, perhaps asking the neighbors for help who grow things without pesticides or chemicals. There are local sources of maple syrup and honey for a sweet convection for desert. I would be reticent to buy vegetables and fruits that have made the 1500-2000 mile journey across country to our grocers. After all God is coming to my home, my country for dinner and deserves a taste of our fine local fare. Plus, I’d want to give Him the history and source of what I was serving, the thankfulness for His generosity in helping me to grow it, and the love in preparing it for Him in a healthy way. Finally, I’d want to keep it simple and in portions respectful of the good earth from which it came. After all, “Fill your bowl to the brim, and it will spill," says Lao Tzu in the Tao Te Ching. Perhaps I could satisfy my spirit, bow to current medical knowledge, AND please God (or whoever IS coming to dinner) with a simple meal of baked home grown chicken, mashed potatoes and real giblet gravy, steamed home grown vegetables, baking powder biscuits enhanced with a couple of farm fresh eggs, and locally grown apple crisp made with local maple syrup and real whipped cream— all served with love and many blessings. |
