Recipes for Health—Go Heirloom

was originally designed to help us tell if the carbohydrate content of vegetables and fruits was healthy and complete with the other nutrients needed for health. We sought out those food items that tasted best. The processed food industry takes advantage of this gift with additions of corn syrup to foul our design to seek out good nutrition and fools us into craving things that have very little or no nutritive value. The next time you select a processed food, take time to read the label. If it has corn syrup, wean yourself off now.

For next spring, start planning your garden with heirloom seeds rather than hybrids. Thank the poor economy for helping you avoid processed foods and corn syrup. Get the biggest bang for your buck by growing your own or visiting your local organic farmer.  Choose organic foods for health, intelligence and longevity — “HIL”-Quality Foods according to Gearld Fry.

Doctors Davis, Epp, and Riordan reported a study, “Changes in USDA Food Composition Data for 43 Garden Crops, 1950-1999”, American College of Nutrition, Vol 23 No 6 (2004). They found a general decline in nutrient levels during this time frame in the fruits and vegetables tested. They suggest that cultivars selected for high yield and long shelf-life inadvertently resulted in reduced nutrient levels. They point out that significant nutrient losses have been seen in the “staples” of refined sugars, separated fats and oils, white flour and rice. They suggest reducing intake of these and increasing intake of fruits and vegetables. The latter have seen declines in nutrients, but not to the extent of the highly processed ‘staples’.

Fruits and vegetables from your own garden taste better because they are better. The Good Lord provided taste buds to discern the nutritive value of food. Our sense of ‘sweet’
